So, you’re planning a surprise proposal, you have chosen the perfect engagement ring but there's one tiny problem...you have no idea what their ring size is! Fear not, ring size measurement doesn’t have to be rocket science.

Let’s walk through some practical tips and simple methods to determining ring size and finding the perfect fit.

Tips for Finding Your Correct Ring Size

The ideal ring fit is loose enough to slide over your knuckle and tight enough so that it cannot fall off your finger.

  • Measure a few times. Be sure to measure your finger size a few times to make sure your calculations are accurate.
  • Measure your finger at the end of the day. Your finger size changes depending on the weather and time of day. For best results, measure your finger size at the end of the day when your fingers are warm. (Early in the morning, your fingers are cold and therefore smaller).
  • The wider the ring, the tighter it will fit on a finger. Rings with a wider band usually fit more snugly and need to be a bit larger. For anything 5mm or more in width, go a half size up.
  • When the knuckle is bigger than the base of the finger. Measure both the base of your finger and your knuckle and pick a size in between the two.
  • Your dominant hand is usually larger. Therefore, measure the specific finger on which you are planning to wear the ring.

Methods for Measuring your Finger

Printable Ring Size Guide

The easiest way to get an accurate size is to print and use our Ring Size Guide – click to download

  1. Simply select an existing ring that fits the intended finger.
  2. Print the guide and place the ring over the circles until the inside of the ring matches a circle.
  3. If your ring falls between two sizes, select the larger size
  4. Note down the letter and head instore or online to pick out the perfect piece!

Measure an Existing Ring

Another way to measure an existing ring, is to simply measure the diameter. The diameter is the measurement across the inner width of the ring. You will need the following:

  • A ring at home that fits the correct finger
  • Ruler/tape measure

How to measure:

  1. Measure the internal diameter of the ring (that’s the hole inside the ring, excluding the metal). Make sure you measure the widest points of the inside of the ring – from edge to edge.
  2. Write down this measurement in millimetres and use the conversion chart to find your ring size.

Paper or String

You will need:

  • A strip of paper or a piece of string
  • Ruler
  • Pen/pencil

How to measure:

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper or a piece of string approximately 100 millimetres long.
  2. Wrap the paper or string around the finger at the base of your knuckle.
  3. Mark the area where the two ends of the paper or string meet.
  4. Lay it flat and use the ruler to measure the length in millimetres to give you the circumference.
  5. Convert the measurement to the appropriate ring size, using the conversion chart.
